Proposals of the riverside area of Huangpu River, designed in a common effort made by top Chinese and foreign planners, finally made their appearance. It is an attracting idea to invite foreign planners to give counsel in this plan of the new century in June 2000, through international bidding, Shanghai Urban Planning Bureau invited world planners to put forward proposals for the riverside area on both banks of Huangpu River.

1. Area of Yangpu bridge
In the future, this approximate 1.99-square-kilometer area will become a distinct waterfront residential area with traditional residential spirits, an area for scientific and educational offices. The landscape architect focuses on the aisle of sight towards the river, enriches the scene of both riverside area by road network of 45 degree to the bank and public buildings integrated with historical buildings.

2. Area between Shanghai Dockyard and the NorthBund
Approximately occupying 1.06 square kilometers, this area will be developed with the building of international transportation center and the renovation of Shanghai Dockyard. Its development will take advantage of the territory characteristics in the converging point of Huangpu River and Suzhou River, create marvelous impression matching the splendid view of the Bund and the Lujiazui Finance and Trade Zone. To make it, suspended arc pedestrian bridge, pedestrian island or telpher will be used, as well as a range of public buildings with outstanding appearance, for instance the dock for yachts.

3. Area between Shiliupu and Dongchang
This area occupies about 0.35 square kilometers. The proposal takes Shiliupu dock and Dongchang dock as the most important spots to connect history and future, focusing on the conformity of urban scenery and function. The north part of the Dongchang harbor will be reformed into a distinct holiday market.

4. Area of Nanpu Bridge
Occupying about 3.43 square kilometers, this area will become an integrate area to live in, entertain and work in the future with large-scale cultural, educational and physical training facilities. There will be a man-made island at the end of Xizang Rd.£¨S£İin this area to establish distinct scenic beauty. The island will also be an attracting spot matching the major site of EXPO 2010
