FROM
THE SETTLEMENT TO PRESENT TIMES
By
Trausti Valsson
Published
in Desember 2003
by
the University of Iceland Press
This book gives an overview of
the development of settlements and urban areas in Iceland from its first
settlement in 874 to present times. Iceland, being an island with
well-documented history, can be seen as a laboratory on how human habitat
evolves and changes in an interplay with the forces of nature.
As Iceland is small and sparsely populated, it
fits well for the study on how aspects of society, nature and planning
interact. Until with this book the story of planning in Iceland has been
unknown to the world. Scholars and students may find the book a good base
for further study. The 1250 maps and pictures, and countless references,
make it highly useful for such purposes.

How to design urban spaces in small communities, January 7, 1999
Reviewer: Vicente F. de Castro Neto from Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
A very good appraisal of
design examples of new communities with also a consistent theoretical
approach to New Urbanism concepts. This is a necessary reading to those
that want to be updated with the best design practices of integrated urban
spaces.

A must read!, May 1, 2000
Reviewer: Andrew Hopewell from Irvine, CA
This work is terrific if
one is interested at all in the way in which cities could be developed.
The ideas which Calthorpe presents are revolutionary and instrumental
if one wishes to gain any sort of idea of the concepts and ideas proposed
by "New Urbanism". His explanation of his Transit Oriented Development
(TOD) is vital in understanding the difference between these developments
and traditional versions. His use of specific examples makes the work
that much better as it becomes more tangible and less simply theory. I
would highly recomend this book to anyone involved in any sort of urban
or city planning or simply interested in cities themselves.

The
definitive work on urban planning for this generation, June 22, 1998
Reviewer: A reader from New York, NY
Alex Garvin has functioned
singlehandedly as the entire Urban Planning department at Yale University
for over twenty years, while serving at various times as the Director
of Comprehensive Planning for the City of New York, a member of the New
York City Planning Commission, an expert for the Urban Land Institute,
a real estate developer and the facilities analyst for New York's bid
for the Olympics. This book is his masterwork, providing an expanded version
of his Yale course illustrated with hundreds of examples drawn (and photographed)
from cities all over America.
Without
question, if you are going to get only one book dealing with the problems
and solutions of contemporary urban development, this MUST be it.
