Undergraduate Our undergraduate courses focus on the impacts of economic, social, political and cultural change on the built and natural environment. These courses are designed and delivered by a team of world-leading academics in the areas of geography and planning. While geography provides the skills to understand the nature of change and its impacts, planning translates this understanding into action to ensure a better quality of environment for present and future generations. We provide our students with an immersive undergraduate experience aimed at developing not only an intimate knowledge of relevant subjects, but also the ability to contribute to a wide range of policy domains including social justice, health, urban futures, housing and homelessness, food justice, third world development, and economic regeneration. Our excellent staff-student ratios ensure that you will have the opportunity to have close and regular contact with our members of staff who are dedicated to sharing their wealth of knowledge and experience with you. Postgraduate taught We offer a wide range of postgraduate taught programmes that address contemporary policy and research issues. All our postgraduate taught courses are situated within key policy research areas and groups in the School. These courses are well recognised by the academic and policy communities both domestically and internationally, with several programmes offering professional recognition from the Royal Town Planning Institute (RTPI), the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institution of Highways & Transportation (CIHT). Our postgraduate students form an integral part of the Graduate School and are members of the Masters Graduate School of City and Regional Planning (MGS), which seeks to ensure that the School is a place where students and scholars can advance intellectually and in career and professional terms. Postgraduate research We are a major centre for research in human geography and planning with emphasis on helping our students recognise their fullest potential in their chosen area of research. Our international reputation attracts high quality PhD students from around the world, which is reflected in our current cohort of students of multiple origins including Europe, Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and all parts of the UK. We play a leading role in academic and policy debates at national and international levels, and aim to recruit committed research students for the pursuit of innovative, cutting-edge research at PhD level. We place considerable value on the quality of training for and supervision of our research students. Each research student is allocated two supervisors with expertise in their relevant topic, and is linked to one of the School’s Research Groups. Being a member of one of these groups provides a context in which knowledge about the broad research area can be exchanged, and students are exposed to the wider academic community within the School. A bespoke package of methods training is designed for all first year PhD students. A regular PhD research seminar programme and two PhD 'Away Days' per year provide our students with opportunities to present their research in a supportive and constructive environment.
