It
is with great pleasure that we welcome you to the first
World Planning Schools Congress entitled Planning for Cities
in the 21st Century. Based on the highly successful experience
of ACSP-AESOP Joint International Congresses in 1991 and
1996, four regional associations of planning schools, namely
ACSP, AESOP, APSA and ANZAPS, have decided to jointly organize
a World Planning Schools Congress in 2001, to mark the beginning
of the new century and the new millennium. As such, a broad
theme of " Planning for Cities in the 21 Century: Opportunities
and Challenges" has been adopted to cover a wide range
of topics which will be faced by planning educators and
the profession in the coming era. The selection of Shanghai
as the location for the World Congress reflects the view
shared by four regional associations that the influence
of the World Congress would be greatest if it could be held
in one of the fastest growing cities and regions, where
both the opportunities and challenges are greatest, and
thus the need for planning is most obvious too. We welcome
all planners and other interested academics, friends, partners
and families to Shanghai..
